Dare I say… a day of normalcy?

Today I went to work.

It’s crazy to even say those words.

And it felt good. It felt really good. It felt… almost normal.

It’s strange how cancer can make you fiercely aware of every tiny thing you used to move through without a second thought. And yet, even after all of this, I can already see how easy it would be to fall right back into taking those things for granted.

Today, just driving to work felt like a treat.

Walking through the doors. Seeing my people. Talking about patients. Solving problems. Flexing a part of my brain that has spent the last six weeks thinking mostly about blood counts, blasts, medications, appointments, treatment plans and what comes next.

For a few hours, I got to be a veterinarian again. And God that felt great.

I don’t know how many more days like today I’ll get before I leave for Texas. I don’t know exactly when that will be, or what the weeks between now and then will look like.

But I promise not to take it for granted.

A drive to work.
A brain that still knows how to do what I love.
A little bit of purpose.
A little bit of independence.
A little glimpse of my old life tucked away into this very strange new one.

Maybe that’s one of the lessons in all of this: normal was never boring. Normal was actually pretty damn amazing.
